Apocalypse Man – Bugging out.

January 28th, 2010 by admin

The history channel recently has been airing several apocalyptic programs. One such program was “Apocalypse Man.” Rudy Reyes is former SpecForce operative who details “a howto” program on surviving a collapse of society.. The basic message was to find resources and stay invisible.

It assumes no EMP has occured because a late 80s early 90s diesel Chevy Surburban will start by getting diesel fuel out of a fuel tank and making fuel from grease.

Somethings of note, communication uses a citizen band radio this takes the need for shortwave licensing requirements out of the picture.

The goal was to “bug out” but he did not go into detail of bug out planning. I want to detail a bug out plan, and provide a document for the user to print out and use for their reference.

I’ve been developing long and short term life goals that include plans to get out of the “city” before bugging out is required.. Which will change the perspective of post disaster planning.. My ultimate goal is to move to a rural area where I have defend able turf, but until this plan is implement bugging out means different things to different people.

When Shit hits the the fan, think about the “W’s, and H’s of who, what, where, when, why and how.
a. Who – Self, Spouse, family (these must take precedent)
b. What – What will you do?
c. Where – Where will you go?
d. When – When will you go there?
e. Why – What reason will make you implement your bug out plan?
f. How – What is your full plan?

One Comment suggested a when things go from bad to worse..

the idea of a full blown apocalyptic collapse assumes you may have a multi-tiered plan.

I don’t want to have visions of a Mad-Max or the worst concepts of Revelations, but as a survivalist one must make preparations and be educated on how to deal with a collapse in society..

My premises is that all regular services (roads, food, etc, will be either out of order, or non-existent.

I do think one must add to their list a store of “seed stock” for food.

I have stocked up on basic seeds.
Potatoes – select a good variety for possible climatic conditions
Onions -
Vegetables – (use variety outside the normal genetic strains.) It is possible that GMO strains could be impacted by genetic terrorism.

Check this website for sources of non-GMO seeds.

Think outside the box. the point of this blog it to get YOU thinking NOT me. I’ve thought about a plan.

Which included multiple potential bug out locations both close and because of a climate change due to a natural disaster such as Yellowstone going VE9 or asteroid impact collapse our weather for decades.

disintegration of societal order for me would me taking my family to an undisclosed rural location and begin subsistance living.

You make up your own scenarios, but in general exiting cities is going to be top priority in most cases.

Our mission is to inform, educate and communicate issues related to survival skills and sustainable living ..

What is sustainability?
In order to prepare for survival situation, one must consider their own financial house.. Getting off the grid for me means getting out of debt.

I would ask all to take a 1/2 hour out of your day and view I.O.U.S.A. A link is available below:

IOUSA Video

Also download this file print and distribute it: Peter G Peterson Foundation – Citizen Guide to the Nations Economic Condition

These items were produced by Dave Walker the former Comptroller of the US General Accounting Office. They are non-partisan in nature.. It shows a picture of where we are and how we got there.. I have watched our nations debt and trade imbalance grow over the decades and I realize I have little if no power to change anything so massive.. What we each have control of is our personal life, spending and savings habits..

If you are in trouble with debt, and you are on a website about survival, I would recommend visiting Dave Ramsey’s website and getting a copy of the ..

Start with Baby Steps:
I found these on a web message board and is an expansion of his baby step ideas.

0.1: Commit to NEVER borrow $$$ EVER for ANYTHING other than possibly a house.

0.2: Talk with spouse and get him/her on the same page as you concerning finances.

0.3 Do a written budget

0.4 Temporarily stop all retirement contributions

0.5 Get current on all the basics (You MUST have Shelter, Food, Utilities, Basic clothing)

0.6 Amputate “toys” (bikes, boats, ATV’s etc) if they will keep you from completing the snowball within 12 months

0.7 Cut lifestyle (Cut CATV, Cellphone, Regular phone “extra’s”, Internet, Eating out, etc) and/or take second job if $1000 EF will take more than 30-90 days. (depending on income)

0.8 Get current on ALL bills

1.0 Save $1000 In baby EF

1.1 Chop up CC’s (You have an EF now, no NEED to keep those CC’s !!)

1.2 Get Health insurance NOW (chances of getting sick w/ major medical bills are larger than that of death), especially if you have children.

1.3 Get Life insurance NOW if you have considerable debt/your family couldn’t make it financially if you died. Especially important if you have children !! Social Insecurity provides only a small amount of coverage if you have dependents.

1.4 Amputate cars that you can’t pay off within 24 months (You have an EF to fix the “bondo buggy” if something should happen)

1.5 Consider raising insurance deductables to $500 or $1000 and dropping full coverage on paid for “bondo buggy” (You have an EF ya know)

2.0 Do debt snowball, paying all your debts from lowest BALANCE to highest.

2.1: You can take your first vacation since finding Dave if you can pay cash for it (no using the EF !!!)

3.0 Save 3-6 months EXPENSES in EF

3.1 Start car replacement fund

3.2 Save up 20% for home purchase OR pay down existing mortgage to the point you can drop PMI.

3.3 Start furniture or other non-essential stuff replacement fund

3.4 Move up in car if you still feel the need to (must pay cash for it)

4.0 Start contributing 15% of your paycheck to retirement.

5.0 Save for kids college fund

6.0 Pay off house early

7.0 Live like no one else since you have lived like no one else (investment ideas at this stage greatly appreciated, Dave doesn’t go into too much detail on this stage)

I found these useful in getting started, but attending a scheduled 13 week session of Financial Peace University for around $100 at a local church is very useful, and motivating to sign up: Search Here
